Comprehensive Dictionary of Industry & Technology NE-EN/EN-NE now in production.

The plans by Translex to publish the Comprehensive Dictionary of Industry & Technology [Dutch-English/English-Dutch] later this year are on schedule again after a few drawbacks an delays related to the release of Windows 7. Translex chose to adapt the software to meet the demands of Windows 7 to ensure that it is both upward and backward compatible with Windows XP through to the latest version of Windows.

Translex decided earlier this year to team up with the makers of www.evoterm.net and provide an online version of the bilingual technical dictionary first, before its publication on CDROM planned later this year. The dictionary software chosen for the CDROM version is UNILEX [www.acolada.de] and tlReader [by TShwaneLex].

The online dictionary is a subscription database through EVO-Term where users pay an annual subscription for the use of the dictionary via the main Evo-term site. The first version was launched this summer and already has numerous subscribers.

The annual renewable licence subscription will provide users with personalized access to the most up-to-date version of the dictionaries as new entries and translations are added to the existing and ever-expanding online corpus.

This is not the case with the CDROM, as a CDROM cannot be kept up-to-date once published. However, subscribers to the online dictionary database will be offered a 50% discount off the price of the CDROM version when it is available and free updates for 2 years..

The online dictionary is by the same author as the reputed Groot Polytechnisch Woordenboek NE-EN/EN-NE by Kluwer, but is much more extensive [containing some 60,000 more entries] and has been authored independently of SDU and Kluwer.

The obvious advantage of an online version is that it can be updated on a weekly basis to include the very latest terms and translations in numerous technological fields. This process will be ongoing, thus ensuring that it never becomes outdated or contains obsolete terms.

The dictionary has been under construction for many years already and Brandstetter Verlag [the publishers of the ERNST dictionaries] have shown a keen interest in a German counterpart of the database, so that it will hopefully eventually become a trilingual dictionary database and CDROM by the beginning of 2011.

The compilation of the NE-DE-EN version is already underway so we therefore hope to make an initial trial version available to subscribers before the end of 2010, also on CDROM. A preview version containing 100,000 entries will be available to a select group of subscribers to evoterm soon after July 2010.
